About

Alexandre Latour

Hi, thank you for dropping by, my name is Alexandre Latour, I’m the teacher behind Shakaizen.

Fifth generation Indian, I was born and raised in Mauritius by my single mother who lulled me with stories from the Mahabharata, an epic of ancient India, and exposed me to yoga from an early age.

I grew up an introvert more interested in knowledge regarding the meaning of life and death than in earning a university degree. I dropped out of high school, started studying yoga philosophy and practicing yoga postures rigorously.

I found myself teaching “yoga” at the age of 21 when yoga certifications were not common and that the only way you could be taken seriously as a “yoga” teacher was by showing proof of a dedicated practice, and from having spent time practicing in one of the classical schools in India.

While I have studied intensively many modern yoga styles like the Viniyoga of Krishnamacharya, BKS Iyengar Yoga, K Pattabhi Jois’ Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, and Sivananda Yoga, the main essence of my studies and teachings remained deeply rooted in the classical ancient texts of yoga like the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, the Yoga Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita.

Today it’s been more than 15 years since I’ve been a teacher. After a decade of traveling the world teaching to an international audience of mixed levels and backgrounds, I now share my time between the peaceful mountains of North India and the deep waters of Mauritius.
